Oslo, Norway — February 27, 2008: In reversing the decision it made in January 2007, Opera has return to Google for its’ industry-leading Mobile browser search engine. The Norwegian industry-leading mobile browser maker Opera has dumped Yahoo after only 13 months together. The partnership sees Google reinstated as Opera’s search engine of choice for its mobile web browsers Opera Mobile and Opera Mini, with Google’s search box sitting directly on the browsers’ start page. This means Opera’s 100 million users can access Google search wherever and whenever they need information quickly and effortlessly .
The announcement comes only 2 weeks after Google lost the first round in the Mobile battle. On Tue 12 Feb 2008, Yahoo and T-Mobile announced in Barcelona that Yahoo would take over as exclusive web search provider across much of Europe from the beginning of March (a position that once-apon-a-time belonged to Google). Yahoo’s oneSearch now has 600 Million subscribers world wide.
Opera’s two mobile products, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile, set the standard for mobile Web browsing on both feature phones and smartphones, and the success of Opera Mini is a testimony of the mobile Web’s acceptance by typical consumers. In 2007, more than 55 new phone models were launched with Opera Mobile pre-installed as the default Web browser, and millions of people using phones with typical limited browsing capabilities, have made the personal choice to download and install Opera Mini to their phones. Opera Mini users characteristically to use the Web more dynamically and browse more then 1.7 Billion pages per month through search engines.
This new mobile partnership includes all of Opera’s standard mobile Web service and covers all global territories except the Commonwealth of Independent States and Russia.
Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera says: “Google and Opera have established a valuable relationship over the years and we look forward to continued collaboration on mobile products. With 2008 poised to be the year the mobile Web goes mainstream, Google and Opera are extending this collaboration to give our users immediate access to the quality and convenience of Google’s search results. We’re excited to extend this productive relationship and we hope that the nearly 100 million people using our mobile products will agree.”
