In today’s troubled times, many people are looking for a technological solution to their financial struggles, and the easy accessibility of Internet Marketing is both luring and frightening. No longer is most commerce done face-to-face, and when conducted over the web you can’t look someone in the eye and sense deception.

Yes there are incredible stories of rag-to-riches, but for every true story, there are a 1,000 scams, copycats and outright fabrications. No one wants to admit they’ve been deceived, so before you dive into an online business, take a few minutes to learn the difference between the Fantasies and reality. Possibly these tips will help you avoid the marketing pitfalls along the road to financial freedom.

Fantasy #1. Making Money Online is a Piece of Cake

So you’re starting to look for a home-based business and you Google “Make Money online”; you end up with a torrent of offers promising tons of money can be made in just 30 minutes a day — if you first send them $49.99. “Hurry this offer expires today, just give up your credit card number, and you’ll be rich!” Hogwash!

Reality Check: It’s not easy; it takes hard work and dedication. If it were that easy, everyone and their Granny would be e-millionaires by now. They would teach it in public school and no one would ever leave their homes to go to work again – now wouldn’t ruin the world. While it is possible to learn the skills necessary to conduct an e-business, it’s simply ridiculous to believe you can make $1Million in just 30 minutes a day.

Fantasy #2: Anyone Can Make Money Online

“Anyone can do it, it’s as easy as Flying an Airplane Too!” “You don’t need brains to make money online cause we do all the work for you!”

Reality Check: Can you fly an Airplane (well I can, but that’s another story)? You might be willing to learn, but it would take you 6 months to a year, and cost a lot of money. Are you willing to work hard to fulfill that dream? The same logic applies to making money online but only a few will pursue that dream with hard work, determination, and a bit of luck. Not every one has what it takes –The Right Stuff—to pursue that goal, and more than 90% fail because they make common mistakes, or just don’t stick with it. That being said, it is also true that: if you don’t try, don’t take action, you won’t make money online –ever, no matter how many times you read this article!

Fantasy #3: Get Rich Quick!

“That’s right folks, just join my Super Secret Club, and you’ll make millions while you sleep tonight and you can kiss your boss goodbye tomorrow!” This kind of hype is fraudulent and cheapens the honest programs that are available online.

Reality Check: Regardless of the program you join, there’s no such thing as an overnight success. Any achievement will come from persistence and hard work. Let’s clarify “quick”: most would think a few weeks, or month, that in the right niche market the dough will automatically start rolling in, but that’s simply not the case.

Most honest IM’ers will tell you it takes year or more of dedicated work before most will see any kind of a sustainable income so it’s important to be reasonable in your expectations so as not to become discouraged and quit.

Fantasy #4: Zero Cost to Make Money Online

Reality Check: There is no such thing as a free lunch. While you won’t have the costs associated with ‘brick-&-mortar’ business, such as overhead, salaries, etc., there are always costs involved in starting a business. Some of these costs may not be apparent as first, such as the hydro to run your computer and your Internet access, and your working budget will significantly impact your timeline of success.

For the beginner there are free resources available but “you get what you pay for”, but if you have no budget you can use them, but be aware some investment will be required along the way. Personally I like this rule of thumb: “Don’t spend online what you haven’t earned.” With that in mind, see my article on Blogging + Adsense = $Money.

Other costs that you can expect and should be prepared for may include:

  • Cost of purchasing a PC
  • Membership to a website
  • Internet marketing courses
  • Digital camera
  • Printer/scanner and ink
  • Internet connection,
  • Hosting and Domain name
  • PPC (pay-per-click) to drive traffic to your site

You will also need proficiency to build websites, and mostly it will cost you TIME and patience. Don’t go spending money on every e-book or program out there and use the free resources as much as you can. Remember: your goal is to make money, not build up dept!

Fantasy #5: It’s Too Late to Start Now –I’m too old to learn!

“ I didn’t grow up with computers, I can’t understand them, and I’m retired.” Don’t even attempt to become a Google or a Johnny-come-lately MSN. You might just fail before you begin.

Reality Check: It’s never too late to learn a new trick. If you’ve read down this far and understood everything I said, you can learn to make money online. Just think of your favorite niche (that’s a focused target sector of the market) as a solution to your budget-tight income. If you’re a little afraid of the internet (you can’t be too afraid if you found this article –congratulations), then find a local 12-year old to help you out!

Fantasy #6: If you Build it, They will Buy it.

Remember the movie, so just create any old web site, and even if there are 1,000’s like it, people will flock over the digital highways to buy from you!

Reality Check: Why should they? How will they find your site from the Millions that are out there? How will buyers even know your site exists? Now don’t get discouraged, there are ways to help buyers find you! . If you have designed a site, have a good business plan, implemented it effectively, then the buyers will come to you. Gradually at first, then more as word spreads but not a moment sooner.

Fantasy # 7: Only Techno Geeks and Gurus can make Big money on line.

Reality Check: Well Bill Gates isn’t one of those, and he’s made oodles of dough —because he knows how to outsource, or hire people with skills. Technology has advanced so rapidly that no one can keep up with it all, but the software available today helps you do most things with a click of a button. Now, with the help of What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) editors, templates, tutorials, etc even a Granny can create her own website in minutes, or get your 12 year old grandson/daughter to do it for you!

Fantasy #8: It’s all Just Hype, Smoke and Mirrors

Reality Check: Where there’s smoke there’s Fire! People aren’t crazy to discard secure jobs to venture into online marketing. Not every story’s just hype, but it’s not a piece of cake. Between the 2 extremes you must find the viable, intelligent, working system that will help you achieve great success, as long as you are ready to work hard and work smart.

The only failures in live are those who stop trying. Abraham Lincoln lost over 10 political elections before he ran for President – and won! Keep trying.
