You’ve finally reached a point in the growth of your Internet business where you’re ready to purchase a Domain name. After much research you’ve developed a check list of the benefits of having your own Domain name, such as:

  1. Increased credibility in the eyes of potential customers
  2. Portability; you can easily change web hosting services and your visitors’ bookmarks will still find you, nor will the move break any links to your site.
  3. Domain names which include common keywords can improve a site’s ranking in search results
  4. Domain names produce a perception of professionalism
  5. They are easier to remember.

The next decision you must make is whether or not to create a new domain name or purchase an Expired domain name. Since Millions of domain names have already been listed, it may be difficult to create a new relevant name for your company web site. While a new Domain name has no standing with the search engines, and older expired one can give your business a boast of traffic and trust value. The Live Cycle of domain name is from 1 to 10 years and every day 2000 of them expire, so the one you want might soon be available. There are several types of incentives to purchasing an expired domain:

  1. The most valuable expired domains are dictionary domains - words that can be found in the dictionary
  2. Targeting deleted domain names with existing Google Page Rank
  3. Active Yahoo Links and Back Links
  4. Domain names with existing back links from other sites are already indexed in the major search engines
  5. Existing Alexa traffic rankings is a good indicator that some of those visitors will be returning in the future

Why Alexa Traffic Domains

The Alexa rank is a measurement of a domain’s unique visitor traffic and page views. The lower the rating on Alexa the better; e.g.: a ranking under 100,000 indicates good traffic to the site.

Yahoo.com currently holds the #1 position in Alexa.

While there are many enticing reasons to buy an expired domain name there are also some risks involved in the process. “Let the buyer beware” applies to anything you purchase and a “bad” domain name can ruin your new Internet business. In fact the wrong name can cost you traffic, search engine rank, and respectability!

So I beg to ask: “Who let It Go - And Why?”

Just as you would never buy a used car without looking under the hood, search the history of the name for a reason it failed to renew. Of course it could simply be that:

  • They were too busy to keep it up
  • Couldn’t afford it any longer
  • Shut down the business
  • Simply lost interest

If that’s the case, the name may bring some legacy traffic to your site from previous visitors’ bookmarks, which is a good thing.

However the most common reason why domain have been abondonded: they’ve been permanently banned from the search engines as spam sites. It’s known that 99% of Domain names for sale on Google are worthless junk with fake Pagerank. So be wary, and do your homework, or your dream-name may turn into a nightmare. I’ve included a small checklist of sites you should use before buying an expired domain:

Checklist

Now that we’ve covered the “Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”, lets get down to the where and how to buy that glorious name for you own domain. Here’s a quick list of some places to look for domains with PR and backlinks:

When a domain name expires, it is not immediately erased but must go thru a “life cycle” before made available for a new registration. Once it reaches the end of this cycle, it will be made available for public purchase. The registration fee will depend on the perceived value of the domain, (determined by it’s PageRank or PR) but the following is price range you could expect:

  • PR2 : $10 - $25
  • PR3 : $10 - $50
  • PR4 : $25 - $200
  • PR5 : $75 - $400
  • PR6 : $400 - and up

Domains are registered for a period of 1 to 10 years, and if you want to keep it longer, you must renew before it expires again.

Always keep in mind that domains are only as valuable as you make them; if you fill your web site with junk, the domain will lose it’s page ranking and your traffic will drop, and even the most expensive name will become worthless.
